I have been a volunteer with Inspiration Hospice for five years now. I write for the newsletter, visit patients and present at new volunteer trainings, but my favorite part is taking on 11th Hour shifts where we sit with the actively dying so that no one need die alone.
I feel a "calling" to both the beginning of life and the end, perhaps because that is when we are closest to heaven or heaven is closest to us. At birth, there is usually a good support group on hand, but not so in death. What a joy it is to be there for someone at the close of their earthly life and to be allowed to share such a sacred, intimate time!
My goal with this blog is to share with you some of the things I have learned through volunteering. These things should be helpful to not just hospice volunteers, but to anyone who may be struggling to help a friend or family member through their final days.
I hope to not just share, but to learn more myself, so please, comment with your experiences, insights, suggestions and ideas!
